VISITING MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS DURING CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS PART 1

It's been a while since my last blog. Reason for that is very simple. I was in Slovenia for two weeks, visiting my family and friends. And of course spending Christmas and New Year with them. So ... Happy New Year everyone :)

When I had just moved to Scotland and mum had asked me "When are you planning to come home for a visit?" I had said "Probably sometime in January?. Mum's question was of course rethorical. She expected me to come home during Christmas holidays. Reasons for that were simple: mum has days of work at that time, plus Christmas is a family holiday. I, if I'm honest, hesitated. I wanted to see how Christmad and New Year's Eve look like here. I wanted a new experience, as everything is always the same back home. Not that everything being the same is a problem. Of course it isn't. Another reason why I didn't want to come then is the price of plane tickets. Due to holidays, plane tickets are quite expensive. But anyhow ... Thank God I went home for holidays. I would've liked it in Scotland, I'm sure, but I loved being back home again. And as mum said, Christmas is a family holiday. I would have missed my family too much if I'd stayed here. Plus I must not forget to mention this. The weather was spectacular! It was sunny and quite warm in the first week - around 10°C. The second week was amazing. Snow (we got around 40 - 50 cm of snow) and then it was freezing (the temperature varied between -15 and -5 °C). This is how every winter should be like. Snowy and freezing. Because when it's snowing or when it's freezing, there's no rain and hardly ever any fog. Plus for some reason freezing temperatures make me feel very alive.

Now to tell you something about my vacation back home. I landed in Trst (Trieste, Italy) on 19th of December at around 17 pm. Mum, sister and Špela were waiting for me. When I saw them, I immediately noticed a huge poster that Špela was holding. Later she told me that many people were glancing towards her way and wondering what was written on the poster. You'll see what was written on the poster in the picture. But to translate it now; it says ... Hi, friend! I missed you so much! (in Scottish dialect).

Špela and me.

After we said hi to each other and stopped hugging, I got a nice sandwich with my favourite salami - Poli, cheese and pickles. Loved it! I've missed Slovenian bread very much. Not to mention how much I missed Poli :) Then it was time to hit the road. Of course I drove. And I loved it so much! Missed driving on the proper side, with gear shift in my right hand, wheel in my left and driving fast on motorway. It was so much fun. To be honest, I needed few minutes to get used to driving my mum's car again, because steering wheel is much much softer to the car I drive in Scotland. But just few minutes, not much :)

We dropped Špela at her place, where my friend Iztok, Špela's brother, waited for me outside to say hi. Then we drove straight to my grandparents' house. Both grandparents were very happy to see me again after five months. Granny even baked me my favourite dessert called Metin štrukelj (some sort of peppermint pie/bread). Then mum, sister and me went home. Finally I had the time to relax. My whole family, including Uroš, my brother, was in the kitchen/living room area, chatting. It felt like I never even left. It was just so normal. Of course Diva (cat) and Šerif (dog) were with us as well. I was very happy to see our pets again. It's been a while since I last cuddled with them. Šerif however had a little grudge on me. But soon he forgot about it :) When the night came, sister and mum went to sleep, while brother and I spent time together behind the telly, watching Top Gear. We in fact spent most of our nights watching old episodes of Top Gear.

Diva, Šerif and me :)

My first whole day of being back was busy. I went to the hairdresser and then straight to church where choir has rehearsals. Due to upcoming Christmas and Saint Stephen's day (very important holiday for my parish) we had to rehears quite a bit. It was nice to properly sing again. Where I go to church in South Queensferry, and I presume it's more or less the same everywhere else in Scotland and/or UK, everyone sings. They don't have a church choir. And they sing without any notes. This makes it harder for me to learn the songs. I did however learn few :) In the evening, I went to Ljubljana Christmas market with sister, Špela and Iztok. We ran into my cousin whom I didn't see in almost a year. It was fun, Ljubljana does look nice in all those lights.

On Sunday I went to church, then mandatory coffee in coffee place called Stan, then lunch. After lunch sister, mum, Šerif and I went out for a long walk and when we came back we had to get ready for vising grandparents. Aunt with her family was there as well. Was nice to see them all again. Had to answer many questions of course. Kinda got used to it. Everyone that saw me for the first time in five months asked similar questions. In the evening Iztok, sister and me went to the cinema to watch the latest Hunger Games movie. Sister and Iztok waited one month to see this movie. They waited for me to return. Was very nice of them :)

I spent most of Monday at friend's place. Nina recently moved to her boyfriend's place. We talked a lot, ate a lot and most of all had lots of fun. Tuesday and Wednesday were busy getting everything ready for Christmas Eve. We put the decorations on, Christmas tree, nativity scene, cleaned the house etc. This is how our Christmas tree and nativity scene looked like this year:

On Christmas Eve I cooked dinner for my family. I cooked salmon with leek and sour cream. I was nagging mum to buy salmon for a long time now. So finally I got her to buy it, or better yet sister and brother bought it, and I found a recipe. Never cooked this dish before. But I very much liked it. So did the family. More or less :) Then it was time to attend mass. First one that night. After church we gave each other presents. We did Secret Santa. Mum and brother got each other. Brother bought a book for mum. Forgot the name but I remember a movie has been filmed based on this book. Mum bought brother new hiking sticks. And as you probably already know sister and me got each other. Sister got me a very nice jumper that has some things sewed on. Granny sewed that on. Which means my jumper is unique! I also got yearly planner, small mirror with comb, which is very useful. Can store it in my handbag. Then handmade bracelet and a tiny bottle of salt. It is not a normal salt but a special one. That takes the bad air in. Or something like that. My sister would know how to explain it better. Now to tell you what I got for sister. I bought her a watch, eco notebook, four different types of tea, pyjamas and a dress. I must not forget to mention that our budget was 20 euros. Which means I got all that for just 20 euros. I can't remember when was the last time she was so happy opening the presents. She looked like a small child :)

The next few days were spent at church, home and at grandparents' house. I was pretty tired by the end of the Christmas holidays. Of course we went out for long walks every day. Actually I walked and/or hiked a lot during those two weeks of being home. Courtesy of sister and mum. They made me go! Not that I'm complaining. Well just a little bit :)

This is all for now. I'll tell you more in the next part :) Which will be written later this week.

QUICK UPDATE

I'll just write a quick update to what has been happening to me in the past month or so.

The first and most important thing is I booked a flight to London with Jana :) We are going to London on 23rd of January for three and a half days. Can't wait. We invited Anna (German girl who went to Dublin with us) but she cannot go. As we are in London on Monday as well, Jana's host dad actually took a day off from work so she could go. I didn't or don't have much trouble with that because Desmond doesn't work on Mondays or Fridays. So after I booked the flights, we had to find accomodation. And that wasn't that easy to find. Everyone that I talked with about that, said we should stay in the Zone 1 or 2 regarding Tube, so that Tube won't be too expensive, plus we wouldn't spend a lot of time in it. Anywho, we checked many hostels etc. but not even one was good enough for us. Yes, we are a bit picky. At least when it comes to London. We weren't really picky when we were deciding where to stay in Dublin. After long talk with Jana, we chose Airbnb. I will let you know more about this next month, after London.

The second thing that pops into my head right now is driving from Edinburgh for the first time. Pamela's car got hit in some parking lot and is now getting repaired. That's why they needed a rental car. The rental place where Desmond took the car is on the opposite side of Edinburgh ZOO. Desmond asked me if I can go with him. He would drive my car to that place, take the rental car and then I would drive my car back home. And let me tell you, I was absolutely high. I know it sounds a little bit silly, but it was the first time when I was driving in the city and on my own. Of course I've driven on many unknown roads before in different countries, but this time I also drove on the opposite side. UK road rules are slightly different from what I'm used to. So I was really really really excited when I was driving back home. Desmond had to pick up Sarah from school, so I went on my own. Didn't follow him. But I know these roads quite well, so it wasn't a problem. I also drove to Linlithgow twice this week. Finally I'm not just driving around South Queensferry, but also to other towns/cities.

I was family Coyne's personal chauffeur yesterday. The usual driving by taking Sarah to bus stop and Daniel to and off school. But then I also drove Desmond to church and to train station. Picked him up from train station hours later. Picked up Sarah from train station as well an hour later. And in the night went to Linlithgow to pick up Pamela. She was on a Christmas party. I would normally not complain about driving this much but roads were very icy yesterday so it wasn't really fun to drive. I had to be very careful, shift gears quickly (too quickly in my opinion), slow acceleration etc. The only fun drive was to Linlithgow and that's because it was a longer route.

My friends and I went to Edinburgh Christmas lights switch on almost a month ago. The lights were switched on on 23rd of November. Quite early for Slovenian standards, but normal here. Christmas market was opened few days earlier. And now, due to up-coming Christmas, Edinburgh is full of tourists, which means I don't like being in the city that much. It just gets too crowded really. If you want to go to Christmas market and see what they are selling and/or offering, you need to prepare yourself for long queues, very slow walk pace and lots of different smells. I had German bratwurst (pečenica) for lunch and it was pretty good. Slovenians are still much better though. And for the dessert I bought apfelstrudel, which was also good, but my mum definitely bakes better strudel. Edinburgh is a beautiful city and it looks nice, decorated in Christmas lights. However, I still prefer the city without them.

And for those who don't know or have forgotten ... I am coming to Slovenia very soon! :) This Friday, on 19th. Can't wait! :)

My next blog will be posted after New Year's and I will let you know all about my vacation in Slovenia. Merry Christmas everyone and happy New Year. Can't believe I'm already wishing you this :)

THE TYPICAL DAY

Few friends of mine asked me to write my blog in English so they can read it. So I decided to give it a try. It's been awhile since I wrote anything in English, so bear with me :)

One of my best friends, Špela, has asked me to write about my usual day. To be honest I'm not really that busy. It depends on the day. I guess my busiest day during the week is Tuesday, so I'll describe how Tuesday looks like. Very detailed.

I normally wake up at 7 in the morning. Time of my alarm depends on Sarah. Whether she has to wash her hair or not. So when I wake up, I go straight into her room, turn the lights on and wake her up. It takes around 15-20 minutes to get her out of bed. Once she finally gets up, I have 15 minutes for myself. The past few weeks I've been reading a lot, so I often read at that time. But first I go through my e-mails and Facebook to see if there's anything new. At 7.40 I go downstairs to the kitchen, take the clean dishes out of the dishwasher, prepare Sarah her breakfast and then "nag" her that we need to go. We are suppose to leave the house at 7.50 but that hardly ever happens. She needs quite a bit of time to prepare herself in the morning. When she's finally ready I go to the car, heat it up and drive her to the bus stop. The bus stop is only 2 minutes away. When I come back, I prepare Daniel's lunch. This means preparing two sandwiches, water in water bottle, granola bar and if we have it, also some fruit. I put everything in the lunch box. Daniel comes down 5-10 minutes later so I have time to watch telly. I always watch Top Gear in the morning. Daniel used to switch the program to some Disney show, but now he just watches it with me. Well until Desmond comes down. While we watch Top Gear, Daniel has his breakfast - cereal. At 8.25 I try to get Daniel to brush his teeth and ready to go to school. We normally leave the house at 8.35. His school is 5 minutes of driving away. Depends on the traffic.

When I come back, I have my breakfast. Also cereal. The thing that I do not understand is how family here eats cereal with cold milk. I always heat the milk. Of course I watch Top Gear some more while I have my breakfast. I've seen all the episodes hundred of times before, but I still absolutely love this show. Can't wait for the new season! After breakfast I prepare dirty clothes for laundry. There are so many dirty clothes on Tuesdays that I have to do it 4 times! Thank God for tumble dryer. Then I read a little bit, so my stomach can relax. Before 10 o'clock I go for a run. I started jogging 3 to 4 times per week just a month ago. Decided I need to do some exercise and not just eat all the time. I don't run long. Just 15-20 minutes. But it's enough. After all I am not a fan of jogging. Always found it boring. Even with my earphones in and music on, it's a bit boring. When I come back, the first laundry is usually done. Most of the clothes can go into tumble dryer, but not all. The ones that should not go in, I put them on the radiators. After a quick shower I go back to reading. Yes, I've become quite a book-worm. Can't help it. Between 12 and 1 o'clock I have my lunch. I normally eat toast with butter and jam or a sandwich. I sometimes make Tjaša's zucchini burgers. Absolutely love them! After lunch I read some more or watch a TV show. I also need to iron kids clothes on Tuesday. They wear school uniform, which means nice white shirts for both of them, Sarah wears skirts so that doesn't need to be ironed, but Daniel's trousers do. I also started ito iron some of my clothes. Just recently I bought two blouses. At 15.10 I leave the house and pick up Daniel from school. Once we're home, I prepare him a snack that is more or less second lunch. He always wants two sandwiches. Daniel often invites one of his friends over and they always end up playing x-box. If his friends don't come over, then I play x-box with him. I have become very good at playing Call of Duty and Forza. But even when we don't play multiplayer, I have to watch him play whatever game he's playing. Just recently he got a video game called Worms. I think most of you will know what game that is. I'm enjoying it tremendeously. I loved the game when I was younger. Of course it has changed a bit in the past few years, but the noise that worms make is still the same! And most of the guns (remember donkey or sheep or hallelujah bomb?)

Daniel takes swimming lessons every Tuesday. He goes to Queensferry High Recreation Centre, which is very close to his school. I drive him there few minutes before 6 o'clock. Last week I stayed there and watched his lesson, but I usually go back home and pick him up one hour later. During his swimming lessons Desmond and Sarah come home from work/school. Desmond then starts preparing dinner while Sarah normally sits behind piano and plays some Christmas song and sings. Pamela works really hard and long so she comes home quite late. Between 7 and 8 o'clock. At 19.15 I go and pick up Daniel and when we come home we have our dinner. I'm still getting used to this late dinners and I've been here almost five months now. But it's understandable that we wait for Pamela to come home from work. After dinner I usually go to my room and read/watch TV show, while Daniel plays x-box, parents are downstairs doing something and Sarah does homework and watches Gossip Girl or Vampire Diaries.

This is how my usual day during the week looks like. Not bad at all right? :)

V Blackrock sva prispeli ob 11. uri. Nedeljsko vreme je bilo prečudovito. Sončno, brez oblakov in razmeroma toplo. Torej, super dan za ogled obale. Avtobus sva zapustili ob večjem parku in se napotili proti obali.

Uslužbenka me je pretipala in seveda ni našla ničesar.

  • leta Edinburgh - Dublin in Dublin - Edinburgh: 65

Posnele smo kar nekaj fotografij:

Vsi napisi, znaki itd. so napisana v irščini in angleščini. V večini je napis najprej v irščini, nato angleščini.

Vhod v knjižnico, kjer leži The Book of Celts

Ljudje so protestirali proti privatizaciji vode.

15 centimetrski sendvič me je stal kar 4 evre.

Protest pred General Post Office

Hitro in enostavno. No, alarm se je sprožil še štirikrat, medtem ko smo si kuhale večerjo. Ni prav prijetno nenehno poslušati alarm. By the way, pakiranje ob alarmu je dokončano v zgolj eni minuti :) Zelo hitro pakiranje :)

Med večerjo je Jano začel boleti trebuh. Namen smo imele iti ven in praznovati Annin rojstni dan.

V tretjem delu bom opisala moj zadnji dan v Dublinu. Upam, da ga kmalu napišem! :)

DUBLIN 1. del

Zakon je bilo! Kratko in jedrnato :)

Vendar je potreben seveda bolj podroben opis. V Dublin sem odšla skupaj z dvema Nemkama - Jano in Anno.

Sprehodile smo se mimo Bank of Ireland, Trinity College, reka Liffey in vsa bližnja okolica.
